MTA and NEA Elective Offices
Nomination and election processes
The MTA provides myriad opportunities for involvement, such as becoming an elected member of the MTA Executive Committee, Board of Directors, NEA Director or the offices of President and Vice President. Members may also want to join an MTA committee or serve as a delegate to the MTA Annual Meeting or the NEA Representative Assembly.
Nomination Papers and Deadlines
Request nomination papers by emailing MTAGovernance@massteacher.org. Specify the office you are seeking, along with your full name, member ID number (which can be found on your MTA membership card) and contact information, including a valid home email address.
While there is no deadline for requesting nomination papers, those for MTA office listed on this page are due no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, and those for NEA Director and Alternate seats are due no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, 2025.
MTA Executive Committee
In 2025, elections will be held to elect Regional Executive Committee members for the following regions: B, D, E, and H.
- Elections are held at the Annual Meeting in May and voted on by delegates from the respective regions to be represented.
- Three-year terms begin on July 1, 2025.
- Each candidate must be an active MTA member employed in education within the specified region
- Nomination papers can be obtained by requesting them from MTAGovernance@massteacher.org.
- Papers must be signed by at least 100 active members from the candidate’s region, no more than 25 of which may be from any one local affiliate within the region.
In 2025, elections will be held to elect district seats on the MTA Board of Directors for the following districts: 10B, 33C, 36C, 41C, 29D, 39E, 40E, 12F, 13F, 16G, 17G, 20G, 45H, 48H, and 49H.
- Elections are held at the Annual Meeting in May and voted on by delegates from the respective districts to be represented.
- Three-year terms begin on July 1, 2025.
- Each candidate must be an active MTA member employed in education within the specified district.
- Nomination papers can be obtained as of July 1 by requesting them from MTAGovernance@massteacher.org.
- Papers must be signed by at least 50 active members from the candidate’s district.
Statewide Retired District Directors – MTA Board
In 2025, elections will be held to elect two Statewide Retired District Directors on the MTA Board.
- Elections are held at the Annual Meeting in May and voted on by the retired delegates.
- Three-year term begins on July 1, 2025.
- Each candidate must be a retired MTA member.
- Nomination process: A self-nomination letter must be filed with the Executive Director-Treasurer by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 7 (email may be sent to MTAGovernance@massteacher.org). The office sought must be specified..
NEA Directors (MTA seats on the NEA Board of Directors)
- Two NEA Directors will be elected to three-year terms. The seats have terms beginning Sept. 1, 2025, in accordance with NEA’s fiscal year.
- One NEA Director will be elected to fill the remainder of an unexpired term, taking office Sept. 1, 2025 and serving through August 31, 2026.
- Additionally, MTA will elect up to six Alternate NEA Directors, who may be called upon to fill in for a director on a per-meeting basis and/or to fill a vacancy in any of MTA's six NEA Director seats.
- Ballots will be provided to the entire active membership in March in tandem with NEA RA statewide and regional delegate elections. The election runs through the third Friday in April.
- Each candidate must be an active NEA member, as determined by the NEA Constitution and Bylaws, for at least two years immediately preceding the election.
- Candidates must obtain at least 200 signatures of NEA active members. No more than 50 signatures may be obtained from any one local association, and no more than 100 signatures may be obtained from any one district.
- Nomination papers can be obtained as of September 1 by requesting them from MTAGovernance@massteacher.org and must be filed with the Executive Director-Treasurer, MTA, 2 Heritage Drive, Quincy, MA 02171-2119, by 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, regardless of when they are postmarked.
More About the Election
- No person may be a candidate for more than one office.
- All candidates must comply with the nomination and election provisions of the MTA Bylaws and Policies, which will be made available to candidates.
- All members of the Board of Directors — including officers; Regional Executive Committee members; the Statewide Retired Region Executive Committee member; the At-Large members; District, Statewide, and At-Large Directors; and NEA Directors — will be delegates to the MTA Annual Meeting of Delegates. Election as delegates will occur simultaneous to, and by virtue of, election to the above-named offices.
- RIF’d members and members who have been granted leaves of absence by their employers may be considered active members employed in education.
