In-House Law Firm
The MTA maintains a well-regarded in-house “law firm” comprising lawyers, paralegals and administrative/legal support workers..
Legal Help for MTA Members & Affiliates
Under MTA’s Legal Services Policy, we represent local affiliates in a variety of ways. We also represent individual members in a wide range of legal areas at no cost beyond ordinary dues. When we need specialized expertise or additional legal muscle, we use respected outside law firms around the Commonwealth.
We represent you — our members and affiliates — in our state courts (superior, appeals and the Supreme Judicial Court) and before many state agencies and boards. We represent you in unfair labor practice litigation, contract arbitration, dismissal and suspension cases, retirement disputes, discrimination claims, unemployment cases, licensure actions by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, work-related criminal matters, and in other areas. We work with MTA’s government relations team on new legislation and submit public comment on proposed state regulations.
We open more than 1,000 new cases a year on behalf of the MTA, our affiliates and our members.
Membership Has Its Benefits
Membership is the key to gaining access to MTA legal representation for any individual rights claims that might arise in the course of your employment.
Membership is also the key to receiving the benefits of the NEA Educators Employment Liability Program.
We hope that your entire career in education will go smoothly and brilliantly — and that we never have to meet you or your colleagues because of a legal matter. But if you, a colleague or your local MTA affiliate needs representation for an employment-related dispute, you’ll be glad that you are a member of the MTA.
